SUMMARY:Tri 101: So you want to be an Ironman
DESCRIPTION:You’ve raced Olympic distance triathlons and a couple of 70.3-mile events and now you want to go for the big one. At 140.6 miles\, the Long Course or “Ironman” triathlon is one of sport’s epic tests of speed\, strength\, endurance and mental focus. It takes willpower\, dedication and a structured training plan to get you there\, if you want to make your race-day an unforgetable and successful experience.\n\n\n\n\n\nMany athletes simply don’t even start this journey at all because they are overwhelmed by how to attack the preparation for such a challenge. Others rack up a lot of empty miles and waste hours on training that will get them nowhere but tired and fatigued come race day. Swimming 2.4 miles (3.8K)\, cycling 112 miles (180K) and running a full marathon at 26.2 miles (42.2K) is one serious feat.\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin Coach Kevin\, fresh from his UltraMan journey\, as he walks you through what you need to know and consider before you start this epic journey!

SUMMARY:Tri 101: How to Create a Weekly Training Plan
DESCRIPTION:A huge thank you to David B. for hosting our first Tri 101 Workshop of 2018! Right after Tuesday Track on February 13\, head over to David’s house in Mission to join Coach Mikey for the Tri 101 Workshop: How to Create a Weekly Training Plan. \nBring your weekly plans\, whether sketched out\, tabled in a cool format\, or scribbled on a napkin\, get the group brainstorm treatment at the meeting\, where you will be putting on your thinking caps and helping each other with the strengths and weaknesses you see in the plans being discussed. \nMikey encourages everybody who can to pop in and have a go at developing your training plans with each other. We will be going through a DEMO\, then right into making some real plans… more ship-shape than they are. Totally practical!!!! You are FREE to bring your existing plan in whatever shape it exists and time permitting we can look at yours for a few minutes after the sample set. \nNOTE: I said existing…sorry\, but we will not be creating plans from scratch for anyone. If you have NO plan in existence\, be prepared to help others and that will get YOU ready to develop your own. You will all get a handy dandy reference chart with specific guidelines to follow and pitfalls to avoid so that we can train safely and effectively! \nPlease contact abbytriclub@gmail.com or check your email for the address.\n

SUMMARY:Tri 101: Nutrition Tips for the Newbie Triathlete
DESCRIPTION:For newcomers looking to test their mettle at triathlon\, it’s important to understand a few nutrition hurdles–and how to overcome them.\n\nAs the questions and requests for nutrition-related information were overwhelming\, we have decided to split out the nutrition talks over several talks. We will be inviting all the nutritionists that have been recommended by various members to speak on their “specialty”. \nThe first Tri 101: Nutrition talk will be presented by Coach Bryan on Tips for Newbie Triathletes! A huge thank you to Jen for hosting this talk. Please email abbytriclub@gmail.com for the address. This is a cul-de-sac so we can squeeze as many cars on driveway but parking is limited which means some may have to walk ;). \nPlease contact abbytriclub@gmail.com should you have any questions.

SUMMARY:TRI 101: How to Taper plus bonus Ride/Spin
DESCRIPTION:Special Saturday Ride & Tri 101! \n\nJoin Coach Vince on an outdoor ride (indoor spin if it rains)\nMeet between at 1:00-1:15pm for social time and review of cycling route. Ride for 90-120 minutes depending on the group\, then back to the house to clean-up (yes\, showers available) for Coach Hilary’s Tri 101!\nJoin Coach Hilary on ATC’s TRI 101 workshop on How to Taper!\nAs you close in on a goal event\, maintaining a typical weekly overload and recovery schedule isn’t ideal to achieve an athlete’s potential on race day. You need to sharpen the body’s ability to perform – you need to taper!\nThe taper is the controlled decrease in training load required to bring an athlete to that pinnacle of a focused mind\, and a body that has shed all fatigue and is fresh to go. This is race readiness; if it were just a matter of reducing the workouts volumes and/or intensities it would all be so simple! Getting to that point is as much an art as well as science.\n\nAgenda \n\n1:00pm-1:15pm Meet & Review cycling routes\n1:15pm-3:15pm Ride with Coach Vince\n3:15pm-4:00pm Clean-up and Coffee time\n4:00pm-5:00pm Tri 101 with Coach Hilary\n\n

SUMMARY:ATC Social and TRI 101
DESCRIPTION:A special TRI 101 announcement – TRI 101: Off-road triathlons presented by Roy McBeth!\nAlthough there are many of parallels between road triathlons\, off-road triathlons are distinguished from conventional triathlons in that the terrain for the cycling and running stages are generally unpaved\, rough\, and hilly. They require different techniques than conventional triathlon races\, and in particular the athletes employ mountain bikes rather than road bikes. Not only are they fun\, but the grit and strength required can be very rewarding! \nRoy has competed in MTB events for over 15 years and Xterra events for the last 8 years with events in Canmore\, Whistler\, Victoria\, Las Vegas\, Washington\, Saipan\, Guam plus the Xterra Worlds 3x in Maui. Come join ATC at Mission Springs\, on Wednesday\, March 29 at 7:30pm as Roy shares the what he has learned along his amazing off-road journey! All are welcome so bring your friends\, your enemies and your frenemies! Hang out with ATC afterwards and we promise to talk about more than just triathlons ;).

SUMMARY:Cycling Workout with bonus TRI 101
DESCRIPTION:Saturday Spin: This coached program comes with membership and is designed for all levels. Athletes focus on cycling skills and aerobic threshold training in preparation for outdoor sessions that follow in April. Bring your bike\, trainer\, sweat towel\, water and nutrition! Members will often turn this workout into a brick with a short (20-30 minute) run afterwards. \nPlus bonus TRI 101 talk: Back to training after the off season \nCoach Kevin writes: If you have been slacking off or missing a bit of your training motivation lately\, do not feel alone. This time of year\, especially in Canada\, many of us dedicated triathletes often tend to spend less time training. That’s not a bad thing\, as it gives us more time to spend with our loved ones\, work on major projects for work or school\, or on other interests that we may have. \nThat being said\, we are now almost done the off-season and it is time to get back into the of regular swing of things. \n\nOur Tri-101 talk is going to be about sharing your strategies on how to get back into a regular triathlon training and racing schedule. \nThe talk (well discussion really) will be held at our house which is located in Mission – please email abbytriclub@gmail.com for the address. \nThe talk will begin at 11 AM on Saturday\, January 28 and will run until about noon\, at which time we will get on our bike trainers for our usual Saturday Spin Session. If you want to just attend either the talk\, or the spin\, that is totally cool. Make it work for you. \nNow for your homework! If you do plan on attending the Tri-101 session please respond to this post by answering the following questions: \n\nWhat are your 2 main reasons for doing triathlon?\nHow long have you been doing this sport for?\nIf you could change 1 thing about your triathlon skill or ability set\, what would it be?\n\nHope to see you at our place at 11:00 AM on Saturday January 28 for ATC’s TRI 101 talk on getting “Back to training after the off season”!
